So many people who research the raw diet know a thing or two about physical detoxification symptoms. As you all know detox is the body cleaning itself out and a healing process. Common symptoms are lethargy, cravings, colds, the flue, headaches, going to the bathroom a lot and more!
However a common topic that is overlooked is emotional detox. Remember that last breakup when you stuffed yourself with ice cream to comfort yourself? Well as you detox that ice cream out of your body those memories and emotions that came with that food resurface. So you may think about that ex and have to deal with any unresolved issues. Also any emotional issue that have been on the back burner of your mind will make themselves very clear and even in your face. Raw foods are alive and make you alive. You can no longer numb yourself or comfort yourself with cooked foods. You have to deal with your emotions in a healthy way. You may have to deal with childhood trauma, facing why you are not living your dream life, facing all the things in your life that do not serve you or make you happy. So this sounds hard and not comfortable! How do we deal with our emotions?!
How to deal with your emotions 101:
One of the best thing to do is to express yourself. You can find someone you trust to share what you are going through and help sort things out. If you do not have anyone or like the idea of therapists you can always journal. People you trust can be very helpful because they can provide feedback or a different way of looking at things. However if you just want some way of expressing yourself you can write in a journal or talk in a voice recorder. That way you can get it out of your system.
Going for a walk is great for clearing the mind and organizing your thoughts. Plus you are out in nature which can be very calming. You can also take a bath to help relieve stress.
Having a daily meditation practice can bring a sense of peace and tranquility into your life among other benefits. Set aside just 10 minutes a day and reap benefits. It does not happen overnight but if you put effort into it you will see results over time. Sit in a comfortable position somewhere quiet. Focus on following your breath. If your mind wanders, and it will, gently in a non-judgmental way refocus your attention back to the breath. Do not get mad at yourself the mind naturally wanders. Instead use that energy to focus on your breath. You will get better over time.
Listen to what your emotions are telling you. Not feeling good is often a sign to change something in your life in order to feel better. Do not play victim but rather take responsibility and see what can you change about your behavior or thoughts to improve your life. Once again playing victim may feel indulgent but does not change the situation. Your life is a accumulation of your thoughts and choices.
You can cry, and punch a pillow, and express your anger but remember not to get caught up in them. Once you get it out of your system refocus on staying positive. It is the harder thing to do but it will be the attitude that actually improves your life.
Pick up a self-help book on the issue at hand. Pick up a calming hobby such as gardening, making art or music as another way to express and soothe yourself. Whatever you do, don't pick up comfort foods. Food is for nourishment and energy, not to help deal with emotions. If you want your life to improve and change you have improve and change your choices. Sometimes raw will make you feel on top of the world, other times you are crashing and depending on what you are going through it can be very upsetting. Remember this too shall pass and the sooner you deal with issues the better your life will become.
